Do you resolve each new year?
I do, and I don't.
I used to do the usual, stop biting my nails ... hasn't happened yet. Save money, still working on it. Lose weight, the one thing I can't lose. Stop eating chocolate ... oh wait, that used to be a Lent item.
The joy of being on the far end of 30 is that I no longer make those resolutions, nor give up chocolate for Lent.
Yes, there are changes we work on at the beginning of each new year.
Finances are usually one of them. We adjust our budget, since salary adjustments take place at the beginning of the year. Plus, the last quarter of every year is a spending fest, it takes the first quarter of the new year to reign it back in.
Weight, yeah whatever. This is becoming a frustrating one for me. However, once again, due to circumstances (i.e. end of year baking and binge fest) it is time to hit the gym. For whatever reasons, each new year gives me new motivation to workout. I'll take it.
No longer biting my nails, I'm on the far end of 30 and it hasn't happened yet. I don't want anyone crossing their fingers.
Then there are years when I've made goals for daily living. One year I wanted to write more cards to people. Thank you cards, thinking of you cards, job well done notes, basically a hand written note of appreciation. Don't we all need to take more time and encourage each other in a more heartfelt manner. Plus, I have a thing for cute note cards, if I'm going to buy them then I need to use them.
In year's past we have worked on goals for our family. This was usually worked on over the Christmas holidays, when Hubby and I were driving the highway, from family gathering to family gathering. Unfortunately, our family planning has wained over the years. I would like to blame it on the lack of highway traveling, but it has probably more to do with my lack of organization.
Which brings me to one more goal that I'm working on, becoming better organized. Since re-entering the work force this past fall we have been getting by, but presently our house is a bit of a wreck, and working our way through the Christmas season made me realize that we will not be "getting by" for long. Plus, I don't want to be that family that just "gets by" day to day. I want us to be productive, complete projects around the house, and open our house and lives to others (another yearly goal). Something we can only do if we get it together.
So, have you made any resolutions? Do you make new ones, keep the old ones (because one of these years they have to work, right), or have you left the whole thing behind?
When you are a parent you have two choices; either laugh at the situation, or hide.
(Just don't let the kids see you laugh.)

If Anyone Needs Me ... I'm finding my happy place
I would like to think that I am not a suspicious person, but 2012 is starting out in an expensive, and explosive way, which makes me wonder about the rest of the year.
Two days into the new year and our washing machine dies. Hubby did some investigative work and discovered that the rear drum of our front loader had a big hole in it, explaining the constant leaking. Do we fix, or replace?
We replaced. And, I now have a brand new, shiny and blue, washing machine. Which is making me want to replace the dryer with a like model and color to the washing machine. And, redo my laundry room, which I've been dreaming about since the day we moved in.
Yep, 2012 is turning into an expensive year.
The following day we woke to snow. There is a reason why I usually stay home on days like these, away from the untreated, hilly streets, where southerners drive. We were rear ended at a stop sign. (And to the person sitting in front of us, who didn't seem in a hurry to turn one way or the other, until after we were hit, Seriously!)
Thankfully, we were fine. Our car, which is actually a minivan, is fine, other than a slight indentation and some read paint on the bumper. The guy who hit us, in a tiny puddle jumper, did not fair as well. His air bags deployed and the windshield broke.
That evening Hubby mentioned that his car battery was acting funny. Yes, it may be time for a new battery, or maybe it was just the cold. Since the weather has warmed up the battery is working fine, so we will blame it on the cold.
Now, some may say that all this means that we are now free and clear for a great year, we have the bad stuff out of the way.
Others may advise me to crawl under the covers and not come out until December.
A third voice would tell me to get over it. Bad things happen, and there is no great cosmic force keeping track.
Either way, if you need me, I'll be hiding under my bed until December. Enjoy 2012.

2010 Recap
Musings of a Housewife hosts a yearly carnival, 2010 Recap, encouraging us to look at our blog posts over the past year. One of the reasons why I blog is it becomes a keeper of memories. It is fun looking back, and remembering the craziness of life.
Below is a list of the first post made each month.
January: New Year.
Apt title.
February: That is the Question.
The homeschooling debate arises, again. This is a debate I have with myself, from time to time. During this particular debate the kids were starting their 2nd week of snow days. Which followed a week of half days and days off, more snow days, and whatever craziness that happens at any school, which makes me wonder how they ever learn anything. (For the record, the kids have AMAZING teachers, and it is because of them I haven't pulled my kids out of school.)
March: Our Weekend.
A recap of a fun weekend with friends.
April: Read It!
Life with 3 children.
May: What I Hate About Colds.
That pretty much sums it up.
June:
The first post in June was a book review on a paraphrased New Testament, called The Voice.
July: That is the Question.
Sound familiar, yep we are back on the homeschooling debate. The thing is, if I homeschool, I could rationalize purchasing a laminator. Reason enough?
August: Appropriate, and NOT!
Sometimes, teaching our kids virtues comes back and bites us in the butt.
September: The One Where the Crickets Chirped.
October: 180 ... 350 ... What's the Diff!
My adventures in cooking.
November: Halloween.
A recap of our Halloween evening.
December: I Have a Confession.
A regular feature on my blog, where I make my most deep, dark confessions. You know, the dark ones, like eating chocolate baking chips to get me through the summer, or starting advent with the family, but never finishing the devotions. The dark ones, which remind us that we are only human, and that there are no super moms
Now that I've looked back, I'm ready to look forward to the new year, and all the fun posts it will bring.
Happy New Year!

The New Year Tally
Hello 2010! How are you?
Well, I guess that question will be answered in time.
The past few days began much like new years past.
New Year's Day was L.A.Z.Y. We stayed in our P.J.'s most of the day. I changed into sweats about 4pm. There is something about making dinner in my P.J.'s, I just can't accept it. Also about 4pm, I realized my "tired" headache would probably disappear if I drank some water. The headache wasn't so much from staying up till midnight the night before; due to dehydration, that the only beverage I drank that day were two cups of coffee.
And, much like new years past, the stomach bug is presently roaming our house. The tally to date: 2 kids down, but not out for long. This bug roams fast, and at the moment the bug is hiding. I'm hoping the bug has left the house for good, but only time will tell.
Today our pastor challenged us to pursue the new year in the same way the Magi pursued Jesus. OK, maybe "pursued" is not a good term to describe the Magi. Seek out? Hmmm, however he worded it, it was inspiring. At least I felt as if I should be inspired, if I wasn't so busy telling a certain 6-year-old to stop talking.
So, the new year has begun with a lazy day, a car which, yesterday, received an interior cleaning, an inspiring sermon. And, several unexpected loads of laundry.
Somethings never change.

End of Year
Ahhh, this has been a good vacation. Not that those in the past have not also been good, but this has been good and pseudo-productive, in that Christmas vacation sense.
Yes, I realize I'm not making any sense.
So, originally I was forming (in my head) a post about our lack of New Year's Eve celebrations. The past few years we usually planned a get-together at our house; however this year, by Christmas, I was hosted out and really didn't want to be concerned about cooking, shopping or cleaning the house ... we can do all that next week. Hubby and I figured we would either crash at a friend's house, or crash at our own and play Wii.
If only I was emotionally secure enough to accept a New Year's Eve at home, no friends, no invitations. I'm not, so when friends of ours did invite us to their house I jumped at the chance. (These are very good friends because they have had our family to their house numerous times. Few people invite my children to their house numerous times.)
Ah, it feels good to pull that out of my head.
So, what else was I going to write about?
Let's see ... oh, never mind, maybe I'll ramble some more tomorrow. At the moment I can't seem to find a continuous stream of thought, and that is with the kids taking "quiet time" in preparation for tonight. Meaning it is quiet in our house at the moment, and probably a good time to take a shower before tonight's festivities. Plus, soon the kids will soon be down, demanding we (finally) make the gingerbread house (a boxed kit which has been sitting on my counter for two weeks.)
So, Happy New Year! Here is to 2010, a new year and a new decade. Oh my, I just realized this will be a decade without diapers, gestation, and lactation. It feels like 2010 will be a good year, and the start to a good decade ... a decade of growing children into teenagers and discussions about soooo many topics I DON'T want to discuss. Suddenly, the diapers and lactation is looking good.

Out With The Old
Yep, that is what our trash looked like on Monday, out with everything ... boxes, wrapping paper, and all those not so adorable Christmas crafts the kids have been working on all month. {{{shhhh, don't tell them}}} Sometime soon, I hope, I'll head to our office to clean out the growing piles of paper and stuff.
The wind is whipping around the house today. We live in a windy area, but this is "fear for your children, small animals, and recycling bins" type of wind. I added the recycling bins part since a number have been spotted blowing around our neighborhood.
As crazy as the wind is it is also symbolic being that today is the last day of the year. Blowing out the old year, clearing the way for 2009.
Ah yes, the end of one more year and the beginning of a new one. What to expect?
In one of the many parenting books I've read, during the past 7 years, the author discussed creating a new year's mission statement and giving that year a title. Much like creating new year's resolutions, but with some purpose and thought. The one time I did this we called it the Year of Growth (with little ones it seemed the perfect name since they were growing and learning new skills, as were we.)
This year? The year of new experiences? The year of taking responsibility? The year of ...?
I'll get back to you on this one. We might even complete the mission statement part of the task, with the kids helping to write it. Regardless of what we call this year, and even whether it gets a name before next December, this I do know. The Lord of Heaven and Earth will be guiding us through this new year. Helping us to learn from our past experiences and preparing us for the new ones heading our way.
