Our Fun, Fall Weekend ... Part 1

Yeah for fall! Hmmm, you've already heard this.

This past weekend was another reason why I love fall, the Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale. These sales, hosted by the Mennonite Church, are held throughout the year in various States and Providences. The funds are raised at these sales through food sales, auctions and craft booths or activities and go to the Mennonite Central Committee.
It is a weekend of raising money for relief projects around the world, connecting with old friends who you may only see this weekend out of the whole year, and of course eating.

Yes, the food, yummy! The VA Sale is known for donuts. People come just for the donuts, they line up for the donuts, the donuts are homemade (or made at the fair grounds) and are good. However, before you stop for donuts, because that is a mid-morning snack, you enjoy a pancake breakfast. After the pancakes, and the donuts, and stocking up on apple pie, cheese, and bologna we enjoyed some homemade ice cream. Basically, at one of these sales you consume your daily caloric intake by 11am.

Some pictures from our morning at the sale (the first three pictures were taken by JT):

PANCAKES! Ummm! I have no idea how many people they served, or pancakes/omelets/scrabbled eggs they cooked, but they do run everything with precision

Below they are packing relief kits, to be sent to Iraq. There was a packing line; grab a bucket and go down the line filling it with the required items.

The finished kits. The organizers set some crazy goal to the number of kits they packed that weekend. I don't know if they made the goal, but they certainly packed oodles of kits.

And finally, ice cream! The ice cream is home made, and like the donuts made at the fair grounds that day. They use this machine, I think it is a tractor motor. The kids just love watching it in action, and we all love the ice cream.

After the ice cream we left the Sale for the next event on our calendar, but more on that tomorrow. See you then.
