Notes from School

Last Friday my first grader came home with this note:

Boo (name has been changed to protect the not so
innocent) is not doing any of his homework comprehension activities because
he says his paper is much too valuable to waste on homework. I am sending
paper with him so he can complete the work.

For the record there is, and will always be, enough paper for homework in our house. Yes, I do talk a lot about not wasting our resources. However, it is usually in the context of not dumping half bottle of glue on a craft project or persuading the kiddos to draw on BOTH sides of the paper, not just one.

So, after reading this note I'm laughing on the inside, "the dog ate my homework" excuse has now been replaced with a more ecological excuse of needing to save the planet. We talked with our son about the importance of homework, the importance of good manners, not talking smart to your teacher, and introduced him to a new word "grounded"; v., a form of punishment, where a privilege is taken away, which befalls a child who does not complete their homework. My husband and I then had a good laugh over the note, we shared the note with friends and once again laughed. Note that all this laughing did not happen in the presence of my child, he has only seen the "angry face" of Mom and Dad. When he is older he will see the note and probably hear the story of how we laughed over since I will be adding it too his scrapbook.
